How Do You Become a Professional Stunt Performer?

Being a stunt performer in the entertainment industry is hard but rewarding work. Essential skills are required to produce visually exciting sequences deemed too physically dangerous for actors to perform.

Colin Handley, Founder, Stunt Park, and international expert, believes that martial artists are well suited to stunt work. “Most of the martial arts styles can be applied… taking falls, dive rolls and shoulder rolls, which are all important parts of stunt work.”

Our program covers all the required theory components including:

  • Safety
  • Teamwork
  • Marketing
  • Stunt Acting
  • Getting Work
  • On set etiquette

These components can assist a professional stunt performer with their:

  • Direction
  • Acting Skill
  • Marketing and Performance

High Falls

Falling from a height of three stories or more is considered a high fall stunt. Stunt performers most commonly learn to fall into air bags. This essential equipment’s technological advancements have enabled stuntmen and stunt women to increase the height of their falls to more than 12 metres for specialised stunts.

You will be shown, taught and practise a variety of techniques for:

  • Falls
  • Dives

Using Rubber Landing Mats and Air Bags, you will try to perfect these techniques so they can be done safely, with spectacular results. Our stunt safety team sets up the high fall using the air bag system. The landing is the most important part of a high fall. Our skilled instructors teach you how to land on your back.

Experienced stunt professionals can execute any action while they are in the air such as tumbling or moving their arms. The aim is to keep your body as vertical as possible for the first part of the high fall. Then you position your body to fall into the air bag.

In a high fall your body goes out approximately a metre and then it goes down. Simple physics! Stunt performers require skills in different types of falls including headers, back falls, and twists.

The position of the bag depends on the type of high fall. A Header, a forward somersault, landing on the back, the air bag is closer to the building. In contrast, a back fall, requires a take off backwards, so the air bag must be moved further out.

Agility and Tumbling

During the coaching option, you will use:

  • Ropes
  • Logs
  • Tyres
  • Tunnels
  • Cargo Nets

You will enjoy using your physical professional stunt skills.

Then you will learn and practise:

  • Break Falls
  • Shoulder Rolls
  • Dive Rolls
  • Improving Your Aerial Awareness
  • Body Rotation and Spin

Although stunt work is specialised, many basic stunts work involve falls, fondly known in the industry as ‘ground pounding’.

Learning the ability to perform a range of gymnastic or acrobatics feats without using any specialised equipment. To roll and fall safely using somersaults in the air, handsprings, shoulder rolls, break falls and dive rolls.

These are very important skills for a stunt performer to learn how to do safely. In addition, this activity improves coordination skills.

Tumbling and agility are important skills for a professional stunt performer. When these skills are practised regularly, they can get you out of trouble.

For example, when you need to ensure a safe, trouble free landing.

Or sometimes when things go unexpectedly wrong and you might prevent yourself being injured.

Air Ram and Hydraulic Ratchets are now included in the curriculum, making this class one of the most high tech in the world.

The Air Ram is a catapult that is designed for stunt rapid aerial movement.

Our expert instructors are skilled in using an Air Ram to safely use hydraulics and compressed air which catapult a stunt performer into the air.

For example, it is used to jump and simulate explosions.

A pneumatic device triggers the Air Ram.

Air pressure is used to set the intensity of the jump.
